Service description
The wireless network (WIFI) eduroam of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf forms the wireless network area (WLAN) of the Heinrich Heine University. The operation of own WLAN transmitters (hotspots, smartphones in tethering mode or Apple Remote) in the area of the university and in particular the connection of own transmitters to the campus network is not permitted. Likewise, the operation of own DHCP servers or other network servers in the WLAN network is not permitted.

Users need a university username or, for EDUROAM, a user ID from their home university. A user card from the university library is not sufficient.
The receiving device must support at least the WLAN standard 802.11n in the 5 GHz range or 802.11 g in the 2.4 GHz range.
802.11b is no longer supported, as the performance drops too much for many users at one transmitter when this standard is offered.
The range in the buildings on the HHU campus is about 15 metres within the radius of a transmitter. Under favourable structural conditions, the range can also be greater. In the case of fire protection walls, the range is correspondingly less. The further away you are from the transmitting station, the slower the connection may become.
Access is via the SSID eduroam. The data transmission is encrypted. For authentication, use your university username and the password of HHU or the respective data of your home university.
The following protocols are currently supported:
- EAP-TTLS with PAP
- EAP-TTLS with mschapv2
- PEAP with mschapv2
No additional fees are charged to users for the service.
At cat.eduroam.org, an installer from Heinrich-Heine University is available for all newer operating systems. Android users have to install the "eduroam cat" APP from the Playstore.
